Lithuania's Ted Stevens

Voters in Lithuania just minted three new parliamentarians who were all standing trial on the day of their election. Thanks to the magic of parliamentary immunity, hillarity ensued...

"Lawmakers will have to decide whether or not to strip three of their own – Viktor Uspaskich [pictured], Vytautas Gapsys and Rokas Zilinskas – of legal immunity at the behest of the Prosecutor General’s Office...Labor Party head Uspaskich was Economy Minister until a scandal where he was accused of fraud in managing his party finances and of trying to mislead tax authorities. Uspaskich then fled to Russia, ducking an Interpol investigation and several summons from the PGO, and waited for the next electoral cycle to roll around."

Fled to Russia? Wait, so is Russia the new Mexico -- the place to go untill the heat dies down, or you just win re-election? Why didn't Ted Stevens think of this? (Thanks Jaybird!)
