Today, Romanians mark the anniversary of the revolution to overthrow Ceausescu. On this day, in 1989 Ceausescu and his wife fled the presidential palace by helicopter to escape a mob of angry demonstrators. (Oddly, Ceausescu's destination on that day was the ancestral home of Vlad the Impaler. Go figure.)
Three days later, on Christmas Day, Ceausescu and his wife were executed on live national TV.
