An anonymous source has posted a letter (available in Russian here and some snippets in English here) petitioning Roman Abramovich to buy Latvia. These "hardworking and pleasant people" are facing bankruptcy and, as of this moment, over 550 Latvians have signed this letter. Apparently this is not the first time Latvians have joined together to petition a foreign individual or state takeover. Also this year, over 2000 Latvians petitioned for Swedish occupation.
Unfortunately, it seems this petitioner has not been reading the news lately. Abramovich has reportedly lost $20 billion already to the financial crisis and canceled an "Aspen New Years Bash."
It seems unlikely that with a reported $7 billion left, Abramovich will chose to purchase Latvia, but here's hoping, because that would be hilarious. And the author made a good point when saying there's plenty of room for Abramovich's new yacht.

OH MAN! I hope they rename a bunch of towns imenno Abramovicha. That would be FABULOUS!
But the real question is - if he buys the country, will he still have to take the Latvian language exam for citizenship?
If Abramovich buys the country, then whatever he speaks will be the new language of the country. He's like a Eurasian Chuck Norris. You don't mess with the man!
