Is this the International Crisis McCain predicted for Obama?

(insert eye patch and hairless kitten in above pic for full effect)

TimesOnline: President Dmitri Medvedev took advantage of the euphoria in America today to order the deployment of missiles inside Europe as a response to US plans for a missile defence shield.

Speaking within hours of Barack Obama's election as the new US President, Mr Medvedev announced that Russia would base Iskander missiles in its Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad next to the border with Poland.

He did not say whether the short-range missiles would carry nuclear warheads. Mr Medvedev also cancelled earlier plans to withdraw three intercontinental ballistic missile regiments from western Russia.

(Thanks to Jen for the story. Holy F*^&%*g S%^t! indeed)

Um, it was Biden who predicted it.

Upon hearing the news, all of Lithuania has moved to Ireland.

Russia says they'd put missiles in Kaliningrad if the U.S. went ahead with the MD system. So the U.S. goes ahead and signs a deal with Poland for an MD system. Russia announces it would put missiles in Kaliningrad.

This comes as a shock?

Hardly an international crisis once Congress pulls the plug on this defenseless missile defense shield.

Memo to leopolis:

I'd love to see Congress kill any weapons system. =)

No really, I would.

I believe this is just a gesture. Russia has enough long range missiles to hit any place on the Earth, Kaliningrad can have some tactical importance, but not much of strategical. Potential US defense shield in the Central Europe is still much bigger advantage in this "we have better missiles" game. And Obama seems not to have much different attitude to Russia as the Republicans had...
